Wasque Cottage

Chappaquiddick, Marthas Vineyard

Welcome to the Wasque Cottage website, a little tidal pool on the Internet describing the cottage near the end of Wasque Point, Chappaquiddick, Massachusetts.

We are offering our Wasque Cottage for rent for at least two weeks at the end of July 2006 and the beginning of August 2006.

Wasque Cottage is a place where you can get away from the pressures of life and crush of people on the "main island" of Martha's Vineyard. It is a place to kick back and watch the ocean, enjoy the ebb and flow of tides in Katama bay, play with your children, and read a few good  books. It is the ideal family summer vacation cottage.

If you were sitting on the front porch at low tide, this is what you'd see:

Wasque Cottage (pronounced "way-squee") is located at the southeast tip of Chappy as noted later on in the map and pictures. It is situated adjacent to the Wasque Point reservation. which has over 200 acres of managed wildlife habitat and many walking trails from which you can spot birds ranging from the huge ospreys nesting on pole tops to the tiny terns flying across the beach.

One of the many walkways provided by the Trustees of Reservations. This one provides access to the very tip of Wasque Point; an ideal spot for blue fish and Striped bass surf fishing, or just for watching the swans in the swan pond.

Directly in front of the cottage and about a 90 sec walk away is a small secluded beach on Katama Bay, ideal for small children and small boats.  Farther away and about a 5 minute walk is the easternmost part of Norton Point and Katama Beach. This is the Atlantic Ocean beach seen in the pictures directly across from the cottage. You can go there any time you want.

Here are some maps and more pictures to get your bearings. (Click on a picture to enlarge it)

ChappySkyPicsAnotated.jpg (103700 bytes) As you can see by the pictures, it is a spectacular location. You can see and order prints of more Vineyard and Cape pictures at SkyPic

Here's an old aerial view c. 1965; There have been many changes since then!

Here's a panorama taken from the roof recently:

Some more pix:

InsideLookingBackCorrectedCropped.jpg (49914 bytes) This is an old shot looking through the rear window. It shows the cottage nature of the house.
HouseFromFrontOldCropped.jpg (71724 bytes) This is a shot from the early 70's; Since then, the house was extended forward to make a larger kitchen and front porch. And the surrounding shrubbery has grown too!
IvoryTowerWorkCrew.JPG (87917 bytes) This is a family work crew doing the periodic Ivory Tower maintenance and installing a new lean-to woodshed.
This is one of the walkways maintained bu the Trustees of Reservations from their parking lot to the ocean beach. It is a short walk and shorter drive to the parking lot from the cottage.
Here is one of the many Osprey nests located throughout the reservation. Wasque Point is a rich bird watching location, and just a wonderful and peaceful place to take a walk.
A typical subset taken from the front porch. We just about guarantee you will never tire of this view. It just might be the first place you have ever actually completely relaxed.
Here is the Ontime ferry you take from the "mainland" (Edgartown) to Chappy.

The cottage has two bedrooms with queen sized beds, one with twins, and a separate 'bunkhouse' we call the Ivory Tower that sleeps 4 in bunk beds. As you can imagine, it is the ideal place for kids of all ages. There is a huge living room with large picture windows on 3 sides, a nice warm wood stove to cozy up to on a chilly evening, two bathrooms, an outdoor shower, and pantry area. The kitchen is open and has a view of the ocean from the sink. It is equipped with a gas stove and has a great deal of counter space . In order to conserve water in the fragile ecology of Chappaquiddick, there is no dish washer.

This is a cottage, not a McMansion. If you want a hot tub, dishwasher, DVD theater, tennis court, etc. you are looking at the wrong house. We have a 17" TV but no cable and it is used only to get the weather. There are, however, hundreds of books of all genres, many board games, and of course, all of Chappaquiddick, the Wasque Reservation, and Martha's Vineyard, is at your disposal.

For information about renting the Wasque Cottage, contact Kit at 860-928-5345. The cost for the only remaining two week period (approximately the last week in July and first week in Aug 2006) is $5,500.

Click here to send mail to Kit to reserve the cottage.
